A former aquaintance of mine told me about a card security system that failed in a power outage. This was a place operating on equipment not made by IBM nor using an IBM OS. The data center was in the basement, with company not spending the $ to arrange for drainage of the moisture from dehumidifier ... you may have seen water coming from an air conditioner ... this accumulated in the false floor below computer equipment where all the cables are. They would mop it up occasionally, but one day there was a short circuit which took out UPS, batteries, lots of equipment, including the security system for the doors.

Fortunately they had a fire axe in the computer room so they were able to dig their way out of the building.

We have a card security system to get into our computer room. To exit,
you have to press, and hold, a button while you push the door open. And
there is a slight delay before you can push the door open. One former
coworker stated that someone could panic in a fire and not follow the
instructions. My response was that I could only hope that happened before
they had a chance to breed.
