I have been looking at LXI's VTL VTL-2012-R with the secure tape,
iSeries support, Fibre connection and automated tape caching options.

LTO4 drives are out, yes. They're 7500 CHF here (which would translate
to 6000 US$, so it's probably 3000 US$ over the pond :).

At 120MB/s, they're still muuuch slower than D2D backups.
