It's simple enough to pretend to be a web-browser and request a
"page" from a different site, but lower-level sockets aren't really
the kind of thing you do in asp. . .there are no client-side helpers
for accessing "doug servers".

It was my understanding that the "doug server" in this situation was actually going to be a minimal implementation of the HTTP protocol. Was I mistaken on that part?

I certainly agree with you that it'd be faster and easier to set up Apache, but if the client really doesn't want that, then I don't really see the problem with writing a program (heck, it can be a client to INETD) that just receives an HTTP request and sends back an HTTP response.

If it only needs to handle one particular request that will always be formatted the same way, this would only be slightly harder than a custom/proprietary socket program.
