Short answer: That was the way the application, which I inherited, was
written.
Longer answer: Since I took over the programming chores, I have
externalized "most" of the tables using DDS (though the original
programs are still II, new ones in IV). The original developer (bless
his pea-picking heart) set up the data entry files (which use the S/36
?WS? variable as part of the name) have the same layout as the, say,
order header/line files. In addition, he created intermediate (such as
weekly and monthly) storage areas that, also, have the same layout.
Actually I do have multiple libraries for data, usually by company. Or
other, less sane, reasons. It is, in short, the application, not the
S/36 environment.
Question: That applies to the original question, How?
