That makes very good sense in your situation to use an external printserver.
I'm surprised I didn't think of that since I had the same situation here
with an HP5650 attached via external printserver. When that printer died on
us, I replaced it with a new HP5650 with virtually no setup.

We decided to go wireless as both printers will be in the office, near each
other. We will be able to move them anywhere we want and not need to worry
about available wall ethernet jacks. We got the internal ZebraNet Wireless
Plus Printserver. The network cards are Cisco AIR-CB21AG-A-K9.
