We have a large monolithic program which is used to print insurance notices.
The program is large because of the many different report lines which may or
may not be generated to the report.
We need to make this program much more modular and create separate processes
for various parts of the program.
In the past there was a version of the program which achieved this by
writing individual lines to a DB file with a 1 character field denoting the
'carriage control' (skip 0, 1, n line, page throw etc) and then used another
program to write to the print file.
I've never tried this but am now wondering if a print file can be shared
amongst different programs?
Is there something in ILE and an activation group that might let us have
separate source files that reference the same printer file (module or
program) to enable maintenance to be more managable? Different sections of
the insurance policy notice are generated by self-contained groups of code.
