Sorry I didn't answer-- I had to get ready for work.

A word about the QRCLSPLSTG value-- increasing it from 5 to 35 days will -increase- the storage required for file members in QSPL. Of course, the space required to keep a single empty file member around isn't much, but if there are a lot, the space will add up.

Check out the help text for the system value-- there are some comments about when an unused member is actually cleared-- it all depends on how active the system is. IIRC, there's a never-ending system job that checks for unused members and clears them as a background task. If the system is active, a member may be assigned to a job when it hasn't been cleared, so it is cleared at the time it is assigned to the job.
