because if IBM's prime focus now is to move system i customers to its
other systems before they move to a competitor, ...

Some of this seems to be predicated on Mark Shearer's remarks - which you
clearly didn't hear but rather are relying on TPM's interpretation - which I
felt was more than a little slanted towards TPM's own view of the universe.

I'd be interested in others memories of the reply - I think it was in
response to Aaron's question about the future of the box - which if I recall
was of the "how ling will IBM let you continue to lose money" variety. The
part of the answer that I recall was Mark pointing out that there was no way
IBM would allow the System i to die - consecutive bad quarters or no. The
reason he gave was that the system is used by a very large %age of IBM's
customers and that failure to move it forward risked IBM's ability to keep
them as customers. It was in that context that he was talking about IBM's
ability to sell SANs etc. At least that is my recollection.

My own feeling after the response was "What a pleasant change to hear an
honest and open reply rather than the usual pie in the sky BS"
