As other have said, you could have the application running in the PASE
also but I would suspicion that not many vendors would go for this idea.

Why do you think that? The primary motivation for running MySQL on the
System i is that it is the database of choice for PHP. PHP is now on the i
and most applications use it, so application vendors want MySQL on the box
too.

PHP is a server-side technology just as Java/JSPs so both the PHP and the
database run on the i - no PCs involved - other than as a browser client.

As to normalization I don't really understand your comments. Currently many
(most?) shops use SQL to access their data in addition to conventional flat
file access - lack of full normalization doesn't inhibit this. It is
considered one of the strengths of the system.
