Yea! That's what I was looking for! I created the LF with the CREATE
VIEW command as you had below. If I run a query against it, it returns
just the records that I was expecting. When I see the "select" in the
statement It still reminds me of the performance hit of an open query file
but the system still creates a logical file so it's probably not trying to
do the same thing under the covers whenever the file is referenced. Like
I said, I'm still learning about some of the finer points of SQL. It
doesn't help that they change the terms so that a file is a table, etc.

Your comment "You don't filter an index. You filter in a view" reminds me
of the punch line "You don't get down from an elephant. You get down from
a duck." (in response the the question "How do you get down from an
elephant?") Thanks!
