Your idea of the sorted index might work. It
could filter only the records where FIELD2 is blank then I could process

all of the A's, then the B's, the the C's.

Right ... I messed that up. So if I understand this right, the set of
valid values for FIELD2 is (' ','X')? In that case, my code should of
course change to
SETLL(' ':'A')
and
DOW (field2 = ' ' [and so on]

Like I said, I'm still learning how to integrate SQL into my routine to
replace DDS. That brings up the question "how do you filter the
selection"? I've created indexes that sort before such as

CREATE INDEX DPWORK3/POLEFLL01 ON DPWORK3/POLEFL
(PLCOMP, PLFRLIB, PLFROUTQ ASC) WITH 1 DISTINCT VALUES;

How do you filter it?

My understanding is that you don't. I think if an SQL Index as equivalent
to a keyed logical file, but without the ability to limit which fields are
available or do any select/omit. The idea is that you do the select/omit
by using SETLL/( READ or READE ) or by using SQL with a WHERE clause.
We're sort of at the same stage as you - we are doing DDS data definition
right now, but starting to experiment and try to understand the
ramifications of going to DDL. There was a really thorough disscussion of
this in the last week or so on this list. I think the thread was
something like "SQL Logical file equivalent".
