PING handles it from the 25,000 foot level. If that fails then you can
start drilling one way or the other:
Did our DNS die?
If we can ping elsewhere then it's probably their site right? (See also
DNS concern.)
Can we ping a known external site by address (that allows pings)?
Can we ping one of our DNS entries?
Failing all that then you can start doing the RTVCFGSTS on the line.
However, providing you do not have a backup dial out line for paging what
are you going to do based on that? Trust me, in any modern shop if the
line is dead you'll notice it by the knives being buried in your desk
demanding your immediate attention. The backup dial out line is only for
those "lights out" shops that want to know then. I wouldn't recommend
that line be on the same tcp/ip service. Like thinking you're real clever
and using a dial up line only to find out it's being routed VOIP over the
same internet connection. I suppose you could have a remote system ping
you, and if that fails they could page you.
