On our systems (i5 520's and years ago on a 720) replacing the cache battery required a shutdown. The 520's are so new that ours was the first one that our CE had had to replace the battery in. Took the whole thing apart before he found that it was in a little tray in the front of the machine!

Ours did call home; I had a call waiting on my phone from IBM when I got in the next morning. You might check Service Agent's status; it's been awhile, but I think you can send a test message using the SNDSRVRQS command.
