i didn't call today. i just did "windows" thing, closed explorer and
tried again (not expecting, but hoping for diff results)
oh - and I turned the pop up blocker in browser to off.

Rob,

Wasn't there an update to a Java level sometime last year that one had
to install?  I know I was experiencing hangs like Jim described until I
installed it.  Just that finding the update wasn't that intuitive.
