When a server changes, if it keeps the same name, it is easy for FileZilla to connect to the new one via DNS. sftp will also resolve the new server if a server name is used rather than an IP address.

However, if keys are exchanged then the problem may be real.
Each server has its own set of server keys. I do not know if server keys generated on server X can work on server Y, but even if they can work, the person who installs the new server must copy them over. The same applies to user public keys. They must be copied over from the old user directory to the new one. On the other hand, it is easier just to create a new account with the same name and password the old one had.

Another issue is that if there is a new server with new keys, your sftp client will have to reaffirm the server's identity, so you have to execute the ssh-keygen command prior to the file transfer.

If you ask your client to copy your private directory to a new server whenever they set one up, and if you know how to use ssh-keygen, then you can automate the procedure using sftp from the iseries.

The problem is that they change servers at somewhat random intervals. FileZilla
manages to update whatever needs updating and things continue on nicely.

The technical person at the client end, seemingly familiar with sftp, does not
know how to coax sftp to behave in the same manner as FileZilla does.

Which brings up a bunch of questions, these for openers:

1) Is FileZilla performing some tasks without benefit of encryption?
2) How is FileZilla able to so easily deal with a change in the host?
3) Can sftp be configured to be tolerant of machine changes?
4) Should it even be considered?
