Had a job that used to run 10-12 hours on a 720 with 256 MB ram. Added 2 GB
of ram and the same batch job on the same system ran 2-3 hours

Steve,

Can you tell us more about the LPAR. Which model is LPR running on. CPW of
the Model? How much CPU do you have allocated to this LPAR? Is it one
entire CPU or a portion of a CPU?

As others have said adding another CPU might not fix the issues. But if you
have a fraction of a CPU allocated to this LPAR then moving more of to this
one LPARed CPU might be all you need to do.

Otherwise more Main Storgae and more disks with larger Cache cards might be
a better choice to upgrade first.

Good luck

Ken H.

Subject: Multiple processors

We have a partition which runs *one* batch job and one interactive session
for the operator that checks on the batch job occasionally. This batch job
runs for days at a time and when it finishes, another similar job is kicked
off by the operator. We want to reduce the run time of the batch job. One
suggestion is to add another processor to the partition. I'm not convinced
that adding another processor will improve the run time. So my dumb
question for today is:

Will adding another processor to a partition running a single batch job
decrease the run time of the batch job?

Thanks,

Steve
