Hi List,

My company is looking for an alternative to Query/400. We're at the
early start of our evaluation phase, and are looking for vendors and
products which could be interesting to us.

Lukas,

Last summer, we migrated our DB2/VSE database to UDB/iSeries. We had already
been using IBM's QMF for Windows product. It works quite nicely with UDB on
iSeries. QMF is, of course, a Windows based product. It provides a lot of
functionality for all levels of users with a full GUI interface. We don't
currently take advantage of all its features. I use the ability to create
and store "canned" queries that various users can execute. These queries are
"parameterized", so the user just has to provide the values for the
parameters and execute. I don't allow them to write their own SQL. (QMF does
support that in a controlled fashion - I just don't currently have that
ability "turned on".)

Also available are various "snap-in" companion products. The one we use is
for MS Excel. Because our users are all proficient in Excel, they execute
the QMF snap-in from Excel, connect to the database, choose the query they
want, fill in values for the parameters and get the results back in a
spreadsheet. Then they can do with what they want.

QMF is an IBM product but marketed by Rocket Software. Here is the link to
their site: http://qmf.rocketsoftware.com/

Feel free to contact me off-list if you need more detail.
