Richard,

Joe Hertvik has a good article on it at
http://www.itjungle.com/fhg/fhg060204-story04.html.

Ours died. I started here long after the warnings were gone (or someone else
was supposed to be looking at them). Then my boss came to me with the real
explicit message "things are running slower, find out why!" I called IBM
support, not really expecting them to find anything, and they found our
cache battery had died long ago. Hardware support came and changed it since
it is not customer installable and things really sped up!

The battery itself is the same as one of our portable phones at home. The
only problem we had was that when the hardward guy pulled out the iSeries
box to get the side cover off, the cord was tangled with other cords behind
it and it pulled the plug right out of the machine. This meant that he had
to bring it up, bring it down "normally", install the battery, and bring it
up again. I had scheduled it over noon to have the least impact and this
essentially put us down for over an hour.
