would have seen:

SQL0084  30      11  Position 1 SQL statement not allowed. 

You could look up SQL0084 at

or simply type in 
DSPMSGD RANGE(SQL0084) MSGF(QSQLMSG)

Either would have shown you:

  -- SELECT cannot be issued from an EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement or the
RUNSQLSTM command.
