Using your analogy, terminal-based connectivity, databases, queues,
partitions, and TCP/IP are also non-native to the iSeries. They were
not born in i5/OS/400; they were implemented in other systems earlier.
Rochester merely adopted them to the platform (and in most cases made
improvements while doing so).

Which is why the value judgment or expectation mention is especially
valuable. What is native? In the end I'm not sure it matters, but I
still contend that PASE is not native while Qshell is. Qshell supports
the porting of applications to the iSeries; PASE -- to me anyway -- is
an emulator/runtime environment and exists so the iSeries can run AIX
binaries. No porting consideration is really given.

Hi, Jerry:

Your analogy is a good one, but doesn't lead to the conclusion you
suggest. We are natives of America if we are born in America. (That
matches both the etymology and the usage of the word.) *nix utilities
were not "born" in i5/OS/400, so they are not "native".

That being said, I think the distinction is useful only in that it
serves as a warning that things may not work as expected. It is not --
necessarily -- a value judgement. One cannot say that a "native
American"
(in any sense of the phrase) is any better than an immigrant, although a
rational person will have some expectations of one group that are not
necessarily true of the other. And that leads us right back to the
difference between "native" and "non-native" utilities in i5/OS/400.

Are we natives here in America if we are not blood related to the

We work with the tools we have on the iSeries to solve the problems we

face. I find QSH to be very useful as a facility to work with the
IFS.
