I've removed cards, and put in drives on production machines - live.  Ah, 
the wonders of SST.  Just put in yet another drive on our 570 this week. 
Granted, getting the this.that.this garbage right is unfriendly which is 
why I wish they'd get the nice point and click to do this in iNav to 
actually work (pmr open on that).

But I would think that you're going to want to start out with the raid 
card in there.  The alternative is ugly.  Why?  Because you'll want all 
disk drives raid protected.  And the process would then become:
Perform complete system save (all lpars)
Do hardware upgrade.
Trash disks.  Adding even the original one to the raid set this time.
Restore.
