Ah! But the recommendation was that I install Windows 2000/2003 on the IPCS so I could get Linux to run. Good for Bill G, not for me. And, yes, a limitation of the IPCS, not anything in VMWare or any other virtualization software. So yes, I stand corrected. I don't need to buy anything to run VMWare or its ilk, unless I want to run on the IPCS where it appears only Win2K/2003 are supported. If I could install Fedora Core 5 ON the IPCS that would solve it.
So, as a point of clarification, and to make sure I post to the correct forum, discussing an IPCS on an iSeries should be posted to PCTECH rather than Midrange? Will do.

VMWare server is free regardless ... no need to 'buy' a server OS. And
M$ isn't involved with VMWare.  In fact, they have a competing product
(Virtual PC).

I've got a copy of Fedora Core 5 running in a VMWare instance on my laptop.
