We still need more information - I think I know where you are going with this,
but not sure. I do not know what a variable length file is. Or what a variable
length record is. Are you talking about delimited fields in a line of an ASCII
file with CR/LF as the row delimiter? You do not need RPG for that - you can
use CPYTOIMPF and set the parameters as you need them to be. Are you talking
about CSV files (comma-separated variables)? Answer is the same. Otherwise, if
you know the structure of your target file, you can always build it using SQL
in an RPG program or using QMQRY.

Please help us help you by telling us what is the source (a physical file on
the iSeries?) and what is the target (ASCII or EBCDIC, layout of each row,
etc.).

We want to reformat a file on the AS400 to a variable length file to be
processed by a server.

Hi, can the AS400 process variable length records using RPG?

From a tape file?
From a stream file (IFS?)
From the web? (CGI?)
What sort of variable length record is under consideration?
