Welcome to online doc he**.
I do same as Jeff, read online, but print various parts for a runsheet.
Since you are skipping 5.3, you need to (at a minimum)
read the 5.3 memo to users as well as 5.4.
The system has too many variations of hardware & software to make
this a single book anymore. Long ago I was burned not doing the
pre-install steps so I do spend many hours preparing a release upgrade,
especially a skip release upgrade.
Those (and i know a few) who throw the first cd in, start the ipl, then
look for the next step in the docs may be in for disaster...
Also, release upgrades no longer ship the latest ptfs with it. Must be
ordered separate. And I would heavily recommend ordering group ptfs
as well (DB2 and hipers do always come with cume order).
And follow the instructions for the ptf's (and the release instructions will
tell you when ptfs get installed)
- it is not a no-brainer.
I do a couple release upgrades a year, and many involve skipped releases.

Do not try to use paper to upgrade. Abandon all hope ye who
enter here.

Use the online instructions. They support the jumping around
that you need to do.

You really do that? I always go from paper because I check things off, jot
down notes, record times, etc. I can't imagine not doing it that way.
