*CAT is used to connect constants with any variable.

*BCAT inserts a blank between them (if your constants have the space
already, that's not needed).

*TCAT will truncate any spaces between the constant and the variable.

*AND GTDIV *EQ &DIV - is wrong - you must concat the constant:

'*AND GTDIV *EQ '
with
&DIV
with an *CAT -

like this:

'*AND GTDIV *EQ ' *CAT &DIV

First off, I thought *CAT is used only for numeric variable. &DIV is a
one character field as is the GTDIV field in the file.

Second, If I take out the lines with:

   *AND GTDIV *EQ &DIV

the command runs fine. As soon as I add the line, I get the CPF9899
   error.

Third, how large can I make the &SEL variable to store the QRYSLT
statement? The statement in the actual program is really much larger. I
just stripped it down some for the forum.

Here is the actual command WITHOUT the line I added. This one works fine.

   QSYS/OPNQRYF FILE((DOR400/GLTRAN)) +
   QRYSLT('GTBDTE *EQ ' *CAT &BOOK *CAT ' +
      *AND GTACCT *EQ 3120 +
      *AND GTSOUR *EQ "BI" +
   *OR GTBDTE *EQ ' *CAT &BOOK *CAT ' +
