Quick question about CCSID

I just finished working with the IFS some, and needed to change CCSID
to "something other than" 65535 or *HEX....
I chose 37 since the IFS uses it. I had no problems with RTVDIRINF
once I changed CCSID.
My only problem is lack of understanding, Is there a truth chart or a
article/book/link to the significance of CCSID in matters that might
slip by testing phase?
I am a little reserved about going to look on the IBM KB thinking I
could spend 8 hours reading about CCSID which is not what I want to
do.

Example, I don't know the impact of changing my 5250 session CCSID
even temporarily, and I need to know that.
Do I need to control CCSID scope? and so on...
