In this context, I believe the term "separators" is best interpreted, 
"separators added to the contents of the data field for output." The "-" 
characters in an L data type field, today being '2006-07-07' are actually 
*part of* the data; visible using a utility such as DBU, for example. If 
that interpretation is adopted, the behavior of the CVTDAT command is 
quite logical.
