Actually just had a chat with the boss and he is full of praise for the iSeries, one of the reasons
he/they are thinking about it is that he cannot get decent RPG programmers. "It is very
difficult" he was saying "and all the ones we get are like you, grey haired, all the
younger ones are going for Java and the like."
Mike made a good point about how we have the best of all worlds on our system. And not just Java. There's C, C++, Fortran, and Java again. There's a company out there that has either software to convert RPG to C (and/or a conversion service).

Mike also mentioned that schools seem to be moving away from RPG, and there's lots of reasons for that, but if they get in a sharp programmer he could get cozy real quick with RPG.

But the BIGGEST by FAR argument is that _no matter what their salesmen say_, ANY migration is going to cost BIG BUCKS MORE than they will ever estimate.
And that goes ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY for Oracle!

I just moved from a shop with old RPG code (I intro'd some new tricks to them) where the company has plans to move to Oracle. But where after working with the Oracle consultants on mapping the fields from the files, they are breathing great sighs of relief, like Godzilla-sized sighs, firmly secure in the knowledge that they will never, ever meet any of their projected scheduled dates for the migration plan.
