What you are trying to do is done, to some extent, in one of the
program products from a vendor we use.   They are a well established
vendor.  While I can't give you exactly how they do it for legal
reasons, I can generally tell you they keep Word templates on a PC and
"merge" the data from the application on the i5 with the Word template
the user chose, via bookmarks.   They use the STRPCCMD and invoke Word. 
 They also create PDF files if you so choose.

As I said, this vendor stores their templates on a separate PC and we
use our "blade" xSeries in our i5.  Documents may be stored in iSeries
Shared Folders or Integrated File System (IFS) folders as well as on
PC-based network file servers.  I assume you could store them in DB2/400
as a BLOB.   If you stored in DB2/400 you would use the standard SQL DML
for handling BLOBS.
