I want to switch from 'Workgroup' to 'Domain' for my windows network.

I accidently discovered yesterday that (I think) Netserver can be configured
to serve as a Windows Primary Domain Controller (PDC). Near as I can tell
though, there is no synchronizing with a Backup Domain Controller (BDC).

I'm interested, but I have concerns.

First off, the PDC/BDC paradigm has been deprecated by Active Directory,
right? Infocenter says Win95/98 can participate in this Netserver
controlled domain, but W2K and XP need downloaded software, and Windows
Server OS's shouldn't do it at all. This leads me to believe I don't want
this setup going down the road, 'cause it's not Active Directory.

Am I reading this right?

I will have to outsource the changeover to a Domain in any case, and I'm
concerned I won't find anyone local with the ability to do it the Netserver
route.

Thanks.
