I asked - it seems eons ago -

I don't think that many people will regard present methods as efficient
- just the best that they know.

There are many reasons for this, but I would like to concentrate here on
just one of these - programming.

Whatever the language or the architecture, programming is a most
inefficient process, as I said  earlier, "the most inefficient process
ever devised by mankind in any field of human endeavour".

oh brother.  The solution is p5 pricing of the hardware so there is no
shortage of CPW to run modern, modular software.  Also needed is a
common, all purpose programming language and run time that runs on all
IBM platforms.  Java if it has to be, but better something like the
.NET CLI. That way programmers have the choice of programming
languages but still gain the ability to reuse class libraries written
in other languages.
