There are some excellent resources on this at www.iseries.ibm.com/infocenter - 
use any version and look for the "File systems" or "Database and file systems" 
link in the menu. There is usually a list of manuals, one of which will be an 
IFS introduction. The V5R1 version is at 
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/info/ifs/rzaaxmst.pdf
and similar for other OS versions.
