Hi Charles -

I was talking about converting a S/36 multiple format file to (a) native
file(s) with external description(s), that is not easier as it should be, in
my humble opinion...

I use the digest mode and I guess I lost part of the conversation. I thought you were still objecting to using DDS as a replacement for BLDFILE.

As far as multi-format logicals in general go, while it would be possible for IBM to create DDS keywords that would support multi-format physical files, those files would be incompatible with SQL and Query/400, a real PITA for journaling, etc.

I'll second what Pat said, "Multi formats in a single file were never a good idea. It's time to look at a different way to handle that."

And just to put it in context, I started on a S/32 back in 1976 and have experience with multi-format files on the S/32, S/34, and S/36. Pat's statements aren't necessarily true for the S/32, S/34, S/36, S/3, etc., but they are true for the S/38, AS/400, iSeries, i5, System i, and whatever the #$@ other name IBM may choose to use tomorrow or the next day.
