Regardless of access protocol (ODBC, OLE, etc.) I'd try to make sure my
application calls were to stored procedures so they access STATIC access
paths rather than doing DYNAMIC building and checking of the access path
which is the norm for many of the report writers out there.   The latter
is a significant contributing factor why the lights can dim when users
start using report writers or tools that talk DYNAMIC SQL via ODBC,
etc., if they are accessing large tables or doing complex and poorly
written SQL.   This on top of the other's suggestions that good database
table and index design is crucial.
