We (RJS Software) have a product called RPG2SQL Integrator that is not limited
to just SQL processes - it also includes ways to work with Excel spreadsheets
directly, from your ILE RPG programs. Along with that, it has the ability to
run VB scripts on the PC from your RPG program. I can see the possibility of
using such a script to do your login and retrieval - if that can be done
programmatically - and then RPG2SQL would read the spreadsheets directly.

If you cannot retrieve the docs programmatically, you could do as you describe
- get the files - but leave them on the PC and let your iSeries get the data
through RPG2SQL Integrator.

RPG2SQL Integrator has a library on the iSeries and an app on the PC.

If interested in this kind of thing, give me a call or email or check our
website.
