I run V5R4 iSeries Access quite successfully on all my customers machines 
going back as far as V4R5.  Where the client has functionality that is not 
supported by the i5/OS - OS/400 release it is attaching to, the scan will 
only allow the supported functions to be displayed.  There are several 
client only functions (particularly in Database) that will work on most 
levels of system.

I would upgrade (and apply service packs) as soon I was able to.
