I also use Linux iptables, but I configure it with a shell script called MonMotha's firewall, which is available at http://monmotha.mplug.org/firewall/firewall/ <http://freshmeat.net/redir/mothafirewall/6615/url_tgz/firewall>. I'm using version 2.3.8-pre9. It makes setup a snap. I've never had a problem with it. Plus, it's all right there where you can tweak it if you need to. It handles NAT and port forwarding, which I find really useful for VPN. You can allow or disallow specific IP addresses, control what goes in the error log, treat UDP separately from TCP, specify an address range to allow access to resources, allow or disallow ports, all kinds flexible of stuff like that. All you need to do is edit some options (about 20 of them and they're not all that esoteric either) at the top of the script and run it. There's even pretty good and useful documentation at http://ww.mplug.org/phpwiki/index.php?MonMothaReferenceGuide. I run slackware, so all I need to do is have rc.firewall execute the firewall script, followed by starting PPPoE and I'm done. Anyone with (very) basic nix skills can handle it.
