I was able to change them by going to 

Edit ---- Preferences ---- Appearance ---- Display Setup ---- View Setup

Yes it's normal. They are called column separators.

You can change it using PC5250 under 
Edit->Preferences->Appearance->Colour mapping. I presume other
emulators can do the same. Twin-ax terminals generally cannot disable 
column separators.
