Read "Models supported by the next i5/OS release"
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/support/iseries/planning/upgrade/futurehdwr.html

Another way to read this chart is: Anything past V5R4 may not run on a
machine that is less than P5..........

The biggest item of interest on that chart is the minimum load source
size. They don't sell 17s anymore... There will be a time when smaller
drives ( < 17s ) are no longer supported at all. Some of that is already
happening.

I don't have any announcement material, or any advance knowledge of IBMs
plans on this topic, nor have I spoken with anyone at IBM about this, but
a really good guess would be any thing beyond the current processor and
then one generation back may not be supported any longer beyond V5R4. This
is really close to the CISC/RISC routine. Eventually there will be a
cutoff. Might be a good plan to start thinking about this stuff now,
rather than some time in the foreseeable future when you won't have a
choice.
