   In addition to the all the good points made by
others, you may want to look at reusing deleted
records (REUSEDLT parm on create/change file -- really
more of a "reclaim" than "reuse").  This impacts
arrival sequence and efficiency of indices but it can
help with disk space issues, which sounds like one of
your concerns.
