I saw a message CPF3954 "V5R3M0 version, release and modification level 
installed." which sounds like it matches what you said.

When you say to try the rest of the upgrade from CD, do you mean method 2 or 3 
from:

I've never had an upgrade go badly before, so this is a first for me.  I can 
just try one of the options, but I'm a bit nervous after how it's gone so far.
