I would second this. DTS would imply that data is being moved from one
database to another in a batch mode. Is that what you expect this
application to do? There are certainly ways to use DTS, as Walden
implies to connect to the iSeries and pull the data. There are also
other ways to do the interface using Java. Sounds like your vendor only
knows one way to do things and is trying to force you into it after
winning the business.

Next thing you know he'll "need" the front end to be in ASP.NET instead
of Java/Websphere! <G>

Seriously, there's no hiding the fact that I'm an MS lover, but your
vendor is full of it. Heck, depending on what he's doing w/DTS DTS can
even access DB2 tables if it has to.

To make matters worse, I would guess that you're looking at running this
Java/WebSphere app on WAS on the iSeries, no? So the vendor is proposing
that he bypass the database sitting on the same machine and instead
access a SQLServer sitting next to it? Sounds very wrong to me.

Subject: DTS?

We are looking at creating a custom A/R system (do not ask why
custom!) using WebSphere/Java/DB2 on the iSeries. The vendor selected
to do the work now says he needs to do the back end on Microsoft SQL
server.
When asked why not DB2/400 as originally specified, he said it was
because of DTS (data transformation services?) on MS SQL server. Does
anyone know what DTS does? Is there an IBM product that does what this
DTS does? Is the vendor saying this because he does not know DB2? Is
there any reason to do this project on an WINTEL box instead of the
iSeries?

Please help.

Thanking you in advance.
