Would have been, I agree. However, the problem is that the query
analyzer selects the rows to "feed" into the select clause long before
it applies the select clause. IIRC, 'where' goes first, 'group by'
second, 'having' third, 'select' fourth and 'order by' last, and
actually 'join' goes before all of that.

As for the having clause, it wouldn't help you here since you don't have
a group by. Think of having as the where clause for a group by.
