For the archives, all I had to do was sign off to end my job, then sign back
on.  Even though I had exited back to the menu prior to each test, it must
have had some data cached in the activation group or something.  I can now
sign into the system and issue commands.  Alas, most of them are still
failing such as LS or DIR returning TCP3D2C reason -11 for "SSL received a
badly formatted message."  Commands like PWD and CD work, but a binary get
yields TCP3D2C -16, "The peer system is not recognized."

Thanks again for the detailed steps.  I'm at least past the connection phase
now, though I'm open to suggestions on these new hurdles.
