Sendmail isn't nearly as big as this. The 80% number was derived by querying mail servers on port 25. Something like that percentage of servers reported as being Sendmail. However since sendmail is standard on nearly all linux distributions and starts if you do nothing, many if not most of these never handle mail. In addition since a higher percentage of Linux boxes are directly connected to the Internet than Windows and other servers the numbers get more skewed. Many of the largest volume mail servers actually run Qmail. Qmail is a small percentage of mail servers by count but handles significanly more mail than Sendmail and likely more than Domino and Exchange too.

Having said that however Qmail is not a full featured competitor to Domino or Exchange. It's a rock solid high speed POP3 SMTP server. Lots of add on bits are avaialble for IMAP, anti-virus, web front-ends, mailing lists, and more. I've not seen anything for it that does calender and collaboration.

Umm... sendmail? Exchange, Domino, and CG Pro combined probably don't touch as many email messages as sendmail does. I don't know what current numbers are, but I think I remember reading somewhere that over 80% of all email passes through sendmail at some point.
