In RPG/400 you were very limited.  It could read a date field as a 
character field  CRTRPGPGM CVTOPT(*DATETIME).  Then you'd have to do 
string manipulation on them.  It wasn't until ILE RPG that you could use 
any date or time op codes.

The ILE RPG manuals have sections on How this Manual has changed.  Many of 
the previous versions contributions are documented.  However RPG/400 
hasn't changed in a decade or so and has stopped having a "How this manual 
has changed" section.
