By default, %TRIM doesn't trim nulls; %TRIM doesn't think nulls are
anything special.  Starting in V5R3, you can trim nulls, or blanks plus
nulls, or whatever characters you want, by using the second parameter to
%TRIM:

   x = %trimr(string)                 // trims blanks
   x = %trimr(string : x'00')         // trims nulls
   x = %trimr(string : x'00' + ' ')   // trims nulls and blanks
