Interesting suggestion, but the requirement is to be able to put the formatted text into a variable, to display on a regular DSPF. IIRC, that API is a pop-up that overlays the screen.

 I ended up writing a routine to do it and put it into a *SRVPGM.

Have you tried to use the Display Long Message API? It can be found under the User Interface APIs part of the manuals. I do not know how it deal with the formatiing codes, but it shows the text in its own window (IIRC seventy characters per line).
