minus sign in a numeric screen field

This must be a *doh* question.  I must be having a brain flat.  I have
looked and can not find examples.   I am feeling really stupid about now.

I have a field that is numeric on the screen.  How does one set the screen
so that a enter(-) is not a "}" on the screen?  I use an edit code, but that
is only effective after the screen is processed and rewritten.
