Bryan:
Thanks, but this document refers to SLIP and not PPP. IIRC, SLIP was added
a V3R6 and PPP at V3R7.

Carl, I think this page is what you are looking for:
http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.nsf/1ac66549a21402188625680b0002037e/88

<snip>
To run SLIP on the OS/400 system, the system must be at R320, R370, or
higher. There are two families of adapters and associated IOPs that can be
used. The following asynchronous communications line adapters can be used
with the 2623 IOP or the Multi-Function I/O Processor (MFIOP) on AS/400
Advanced Series Models 4XX and 5XX.
o     2609 - Two-line EIA 232/V.24 adapter
o     2612 - One-line EIA 232/V.24 adapter
o     2809 - PCI LAN/WAN/Workstation IOP
The following line adapters can be used with either the 2629 IOP or MFIOP on
the AS/400 Advanced Series models 150 and 6XX:
o     2699 - Multiline Communications IOP
o     2720 - One-line twinaxial EIA-232/V.24, V.35, X.21
o     2721 - Two-line EIA-232/V.24, V.35, X.21
Note: The OS/400 system does not support an internal modem. The OS/400
system requires an asynchronous communications line adapter and a Hayes**
compatible (AT command set) external modem.

</snip>
